Weekend findings

This weekend the weather is lovely, blue sky, very little wind and fairly warm. It’s the time of year where I think weekends such as this will be few and far between. As the saying in a much watched and loved tv series goes “winter is coming” #GOT

The first of our finds is right in the heart of Southport, it’s a lovely little pub called The Cheshire Lines, the Cheshire line was a railway that ran in the area, I will do a blog about it at a later date. This pub is the type I adore, a proper “olde worlde” place. It does food though I haven’t as yet sampled their fare so will reserve comment for now.

Beautiful

These pubs are dying out now and have been for year’s, the covid induced shut down has done them no favours at all.

This is on King Street, if youre ever in Southport then please pop in and check it out for yourself

The second of our weekend finds is, I must confess, a bit of a cheat. We actually found this place a few weeks ago. It’s a farm in the village of Burscough. They have diversified and turned one of their barns into business units, one of which is taken by a dog groomer that we have just started to use for Charlie dog

They also have a farm shop that we use often to buy our cheese, bacon, pies etc. You cannot beat fresh farm produce.

If you want to stay over, and I recommend you do, they have a few options.

  • Bed and Breakfast
  • Caravan
  • Tent

The B&B is 4 star rated and the camping section has electric hook up and showers, although it is not that far from us (about a 15 min drive) we are thinking about booking a tent slot next year, £18.00 per night, for a bit of much needed R and R. A full English breakfast to start the day followed by a bit of walking and a lot of drinking……..heaven in a field.

I am a Lancashire lad so anything I find that extols the virtues of my beloved county I will pass on to everyone.

But……and it’s a big but……..especially in the times we find ourselves in, no matter where you are you should support your local businesses.

The day after the night before

What can I say about last night? The storm was outstanding, sheet lightning and thunder.

Now I’m no meteorologist but some of the thunder was very quiet even though the lightning was almost overhead, so my uneducated guess is that it was very high in the atmosphere. There was, however, a few exceptionally loud claps of thunder which made the walls of the caravan shake. I love the sound of rain on our roof but last night sounding like the clouds where hurling golf balls at us. I read somewhere this morning that very large hailstones where being sent down to us, and according to the weather there is more to come tonight.

Now normally, for me, this wouldn’t be a problem but as the picture below shows the river is very close to bursting its banks. A couple of the vans on the bank side do have water encroaching up onto their plots. The main problem with this is that the electricity supply is usually at the back of the caravan, which usually is between the van and the river. As we all know, water and electric don’t mix so its a possibility we could have a power cut tonight.

Getting ready to flood

If we get more rain which is forecast by the

BBC WEATHER web site then no doubt we will flood. We have been on this site for 6 years now and this is the worst its ever been, even during winter storms, we didn’t see anything like this.

My family and work colleagues know that I am a proud supporter of the RNLI do you think they will mind if I put them on standby for rescue later🤣🤣

A hot saturday in August🌞🌞🌞

It is currently 24 degrees or 75 in proper terms and Mrs H and myself are sitting in our local having a nice cold pint.

Carlsberg Export

Now I am no lager snob, however, I don’t usually like Carlsberg but this place is selling export which I have to admit I am getting used to. It’s actually not a bad pint. I have never had a bad drink here. We are at their Southport site Riverside Caravan Park. Being an ex bar man myself, i am always hyper critical of pubs but i have absolutely no complaints as to how this bar is run and managed.
